The Biodiversity Heritage Library: free botanical prints, insects and old diagrams
The Biodiversity Heritage Library is a goldmine if you make labels, packaging, classroom sheets, stickers or nature-inspired artwork.

This is better than fake vintage
If you have ever needed a botanical print, insect drawing, mushroom plate or old scientific diagram, this archive is dangerous in the best way. You open it for one thing and come out with ten ideas.
BHL is built from biodiversity books and journals, so the material has texture: scan marks, old labels, strange compositions and proper hand-drawn detail.
Where it becomes useful
This is perfect for packaging labels, educational printables, cottage-style wall art, sticker sheets, engraving reference and colour palettes. Nature designs can get very samey. Real old plates give you shapes AI tends to smooth into boring mush.
Start broad, then get specific. Search plants, shells, insects, fungi, corals, seed pods or whatever niche fits the product.
A good quick project would be one printable sheet: three illustrations, one colour palette, one matching border and a small product mockup. That turns browsing into something usable.
Check before selling
BHL material can come from many institutions and books, so do not assume every image has the same rights. Open the record, check the reuse guidance and keep attribution notes.
I would also keep the scientific name or book title if it is listed. It makes the final product feel less fake, and it gives you a clean trail back to the source.
My take: for nature-themed design work, this is miles better than downloading another generic leaf bundle. The weirdness is the value.
