Opendesk turns furniture into downloadable designs that can be made near you

Opendesk’s catalogue is built around digital furniture files, CNC fabrication and local workshops—a useful look at products designed to travel as data.

The product travels as information

Opendesk’s core idea is simple and genuinely interesting: furniture designs can move digitally, then be fabricated closer to the person who needs the object. The catalogue is designed around CNC routers and sheet materials.

That changes the product-design problem. Parts must nest efficiently, assemble clearly and survive differences between machines, materials and workshops.

What designers can study

Look at joints, sheet thickness, tool access, cut direction and assembly order. A shape that looks elegant on screen may be annoying to cut, weak at the corner or impossible to assemble without another pair of hands.

The Valovi Chair is a useful example because Opendesk reported nearly 10,000 non-commercial downloads or makes before revising the design.

Open does not mean consequence-free

Current download and commercial terms vary by design. CNC routers are serious machines, and furniture has to carry real people safely. Confirm licences, material specifications and fabrication capability before making anything.

My take: browse this as a product-design education first. The useful lesson is not only the chair file. It is designing an object that can be understood and produced somewhere else.
