Book images
Internet Archive Book Images is messy, strange and full of design reference gold
Millions of old book scans sound unusable until you need weird borders, diagrams, lettering, machines or forgotten visual ideas.

This archive is not tidy
Internet Archive Book Images is not a polished design tool. It is messy, enormous and sometimes annoying to search. That is also why it can be useful.
The collection lists millions of extracted book images. Old diagrams, alphabets, machines, animals, borders, ornaments, maps and odd illustrations all sit in there waiting to be found.
Why I like it
The best design reference is not always clean. Sometimes you want strange. A badly forgotten book diagram can give you a better sticker idea than another perfect modern icon set.
It is useful for zines, vintage-style labels, engraving reference, poster details, packaging, collage and weird education resources.
The trick is to collect a few related images instead of one random find. A little family of diagrams or borders will make the final design feel intentional.
Check the source
Because this collection is extracted from books, you need to track the source item and check rights before using it commercially. Do not just rip the first image and call it done.
The other practical tip is to search weirdly. Try trades, old machine names, plants, ornaments, professions, maps and materials. The obvious searches are usually crowded.
My take: this is not the fastest archive, but it has flavour. If every design you make is starting to look too clean, go dig here for half an hour.
