Outcome

What you will make

Use free painting software to turn one original motif into a repeat tile for fabric, wrapping paper, wallpaper or digital backgrounds.

Before you start

  • Krita and a drawing you own or may use
  • The final print or screen dimensions
  • The colour mode required by the intended supplier

WHAT YOU LEAVE WITH

A tested repeat tile ready to place into a larger pattern preview.

A printable repeat-tile recipe with edge checks, export settings and rights reminders.

WHY THIS EARNS YOUR TIME

It gives an illustrator a saleable design direction in one focused session. The useful part is not that Krita is free; it is the exact route from a single motif to a tile that repeats without obvious seams.

THE COMPILED FIELD NOTES

01

The edge is the design problem

A pretty centre cannot rescue a visible seam. Work across the boundaries first and use the larger preview to spot rhythm problems.

02

Keep the editable source

Save the layered KRA file before exporting PNG or TIFF so motifs can be moved without repainting the tile.

03

Test colour outside the screen

A seamless preview only proves the geometry repeats. It does not prove a fabric, paper or wallpaper supplier will reproduce the colour accurately.

DO THIS NEXT

  1. 01

Create a square document in the colour mode and pixel dimensions required by the final use.

  2. 02

Place only original or properly licensed motifs on separate layers.

  3. 03

Enable View > Wrap Around Mode so marks crossing one edge continue on the opposite edge.

  4. 04

Fill the centre last, then zoom out and scan for accidental lines, gaps and repeated empty pockets.

  5. 05

Export a flattened tile and test it in a larger grid before sending it to print or listing it for sale.

WHAT THIS DOES NOT CLAIM

You must own or have permission to use every motif placed in the repeat.

A production print needs a separate colour and scale proof.

Practical finish checks

  • The tile repeats without visible edge seams
  • A layered KRA master is preserved
  • Scale and colour are proofed separately for production
